Why you joined the SK: 6th former at the time, and looking at the prospects of an immensely boring Summer, joined with a couple of mates to try it out for a laugh. Answered a recruiting advert in the White Dwarf games magazine (and that was in the days when it wasn't a catalog for spikey wombles and green orcs!) and managed to get a couple of major musters in before the '83 season came to a close. Hooked - I rejoined instantly. As the Blews looked like the best London Regiment at the time (and still are!) we stayed.
What do you like about the regiment / SK: Regiment (capital R ...always) is the best institution to be a member of in this age of selfish isolationism. The camaraderie that exists in this outfit, is hard to equal, impossible to surpass. Nowhere else will you get the chance to mix with people of all ages and means, wherein at any other time or situation you would remain in your own crowd or generation. Truly enlightening!
What you dislike about the regiment / SK: as far as the SK is concerned, I dislike the wannabes, those unfortunate individuals who so desperately cling to whatever power they can grasp at. Like all voluntary groups we have a small minority who are desperate to be seen and heard - the big fish in the little pond!
Advice for new/prospective members: always listen to the NCOs, they know the score, and as anyone will tell you, a good Regiment is run by its NCOs. And don't listen to the big fish in the little ponds.... laugh at them! they either leave or become Army staff and generals!
Other comments: this Regiment has a 20 year reputation for playing and fighting hard and fair, and I for one would not like to see that lost. We've travelled the country supporting our fellow regiments in the SK, and have even run a few ourselves over the years. If you're looking to join the SK, you could find no better Regiment to start with than the Blews.... and more than likely you'll stay with them too.
