The Pike Block
In the 17th Century, the pike was considered a gentleman's weapon and was primarily used to repel cavalry. Pikeman of the period would often engage in hand to hand combat with their sword and this is still the case in the groups who primarily fight in the 'point only' method. The majority of modern pike blocks fight using the method known as 'comport' which is something like a rugby scrum with armour and 16 foot long pike.
Pike fighting is hard work and not for the faint of heart but Blews are proud to have both men and women in our pike block and has had one of the few female pike sergeants and corporals in the society.
